Tips on Buying Cars: Lease Turn-In, jeep liberty, best bet

Question
Hello. My husband and I are leasing a 2005 Jeep Liberty which is due to be turned in on January 9, 2008 (he pays, I drive and insure it). The vehicle is in his name and we are divorcing. I think that I would like to keep the Jeep but I am unsure if dealers allow this type of arrangement - "transfer" ownership from my husband to myself for a financed purchase of the remaining balance. Or would they finalize the original lease agreement and then make it available for me to buy/finance? Do you have any ideas? Thank you for your help.

Answer
Your best bet is to ask the dealership. Each dealership operates in different ways... Some may allow a simple transfer... some may force a termination - and they may try to force you into a new lease. There is a website I have heard a small amount about - not sure if it works with every lease, but it may be worth a look - i believe it is - www.swapalease.com - I'm not sure if it works, but it is legit - and it may help you if the dealership wont. My best suggestion to you is to visit the dealership and discuss it in person... They should have the best insight into your options.
