Tips on Buying Cars: Buying a used grand cherokee 2000, minor scratches, high mileage

Question
QUESTION: Hi Steve, I just looked at a five door 6 cylinder grand cherokee 2000 with 105,000 miles on the clock. Dealer is offering it to me for $7600, this price includes the trade in of my currant 1997 jeep.(He is giving me $1000 value for it as a trade in). The interior of the car is in very good condition, with minor scratches on exteriour but Im concerned about buying a jeep with such high mileage. It comes with a cd player and sunroof. Do you think it would be a good buy? Although this price helps my budget Im not sure if its a good investment or not. Any advise would help! thank you, Gary.

ANSWER: Hi Gary,
I am always leery at that mileage, but if it is in excellent condition, and you are getting $1000 for your trade i would offer no more then $5600 plus the trade, after about 80,000 miles jeeps tend to have more problems then not. Good luck

QUESTION: Hi steve,
I decided not to go with the last cherokee you advised me about it was too expensive for what I was getting. I looked at another one it is a 2000 with 92,405 miles 6 cylinder 4wd with a sunroof and cd player. It has a few nicks and dints on the exterior while the interior is in good condition. Dealer is looking for $6950 but will reduce price to $5650 with the trade in of my car(giving me a value of $1500 for it). I will be paying cash so maybe I could get in for even a little less.(tax will be be an additional $400 or so). Do you think this is a good buy? Ive been told that high milage on cherokees is not too scary as they are good trucks. Any advice on this too? thank you so much. Thank you, Gary
ANSWER: O.K...Now we are looking better..Run a carfax www.carfax.com     costs $14.95, if it comes out good, then here is what i would do. You are paying cash??? Tell the sales guy you will give him $4900.00 plus your car, he will argue etc.... no matter tell him you found one from whoever for $5000.00 with 96,000 miles, then if you really want the car, tell him your final offer is $5100.00, i bet you get it for $5100.00 or $5200.00    Let me know how it goes and good luck!!!

QUESTION: Hi steve, thanks for you help so far. I saw another six cylinder jeep grand cherokee limited today. Its at a small dealership near my home. Its a 2000 with 82,000 miles. Minor scratches and one small dent. Dealer has said he will retouch the scratches and try to work the dent out. He said he does not finace and would rather cash. He says his best price including plates, registration(he will do this for me) inspection and sales tax will be $6000 with the trade in of my jeep sport 1997(150,000 miles). I think I could move him a little on his quote as he was pushing for a cash sale. Do you think its a good price? Im hoping to get quote down to $5800 including tax registration and plates etc do you think its a good buy? Car drove nice but had a slight odor from the engine after I drove it for a while. He said he didnt know what that was when I came back and asked him  but he assured me he would check it all out and give me a carfax report on it. He Says it has no accident history at all. He is happy to have me bring it to a mechanic to check it over. It comes fully loaded with a sunroof. Any advise!! I like it but am I being naive? thanks again steve

Answer
Hi GARY,
That odor has me worried, it could be from the catalytic converter, or anything for that matter.....Yes, i am leery, i do not want to say no, to anything you find, but this one scares me. If you have an independent mechanic (your choice), and he can find the problem.....maybe, if not pass, if he can fix it i would offer no more then $5500.00, and hope for $5650.00!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!
