Tips on Buying Cars: U.S. Diplomat New Car Purchase, new car purchase, tax evasion

Question
Hello Steve,

My issue is the following, I am a U.S. Diplomat and have purchased a vehicle.  I was honest from the beginning that I should not be charged sales tax, or have the car registered since the car will be exported to my assigned country within 30 days.  The dealership stated that they require a letter stating that I am a diplomat and am tax exempt.  I was not able to get this document as I believe it is just not done and this document is not the regular procedure.  I was told by the dealer that due to not having this document I would not be charged taxes, but I would not be able to drive the vehicle off the lot.  the export company must pick it up for delivery from the dealer.

I know for a fact that a friend of mine purchased a new vehicle without telling the dealer that she was planning to export it.  She told the dealer that she would register the car herself and will pay the taxes herself when she registers the car.  She was able to use the vehicle until her departure.

My question is simply, should I have done the same as my friend?  If I do this is there a chance in the future of being accused of tax evasion or other complications?  Is there anything you recommend so that I could go back to the dealer and make a solid argument regarding my being able to use the vehicle?

Thank you in advance for your helpful response.

Dennis

Answer
Dennis,
Sorry for your problems. I am in Florida, I know here that to export a vehicle, in order to avoid the taxes, registration and insurance, arrangemants are arranged for the vehicle to be picked up and taken directly to the Port. If you want to or have to take delivery and drive the vehicle off the lot, you are required to comply with the above. Unfortunately there is no way around it. I would recommend finding another dealer, and just arrange the export, you should be able to avoid those fees if you send it directly to the Port. Good Luck!!!
