Tips on Buying Cars: newer pre-owned, pre owned vehicle, car lots

Question
Help!
My son's dependable old 2002 Taurus was written off in a hailstorm. He got a good settlement, and I suggested he use it as a downpayment on a newer pre-owned vehicle.
I am researching for him as he woeks full time and attends classes in the evening and I have more spare time.
I have had good luck with cars at the major dealers (they are all her where we live) but not so good at the road side used car lots. Also you can shop online by entering your price range, etc.
Can you give me some suggestions?
He is thinking standard transmission, and other than that something good on gas and with few maintenance problems. Lets say 2005 and up.
Thanks so much!

Answer
I always like Hondas, Toyotas and Nissans. Any of them come in standard trannys. You need to set a budget and try to stick to it. Where do you live?? Are you anywhere near a Carmax. They are a GREAT place to buy a car. Let me know if you ahve any further questions.
