Tips on Buying Cars: auto purchase from out-of-state CA, california emission standards, contract cancellation

Question
I am told by a used car sales manager that i must be physically present to purchase a used car in California. I want to fedex my check and bill of sale, copy of my driver's license to the dealer to close the deal. I live in Washington and want to travel to CA only once. Is there, in fact anything about the CA law that gives me an out if haven't purchased it while in their physical presence or is this "used car selling BS"

Answer
Hi Harvey.
"used car selling BS",,, lol,,, I would sure like to know where this manager got the facts from ?

As for you having an out buying a vehicle in CA,,, There is no "cooling off" period unless you purchase a two- day contract cancellation option. . Consumers who purchase a used car in CA for less than $40,000 must be given an opportunity to purchase a two-day Contract Cancellation Option Agreement.

The contract cancellation option does not apply to used cars priced at $40,000 or more, new cars, private party sales.

Ask the dealer or individual selling you the vehicle if it is certified to California emission standards because the same requirements will be in Washington.

Harvey,,, to safeguard yourself from buying a vehicle from out of state contact your local DMV for requirements, here is a link on my website that can get you in touch with a local DMV location  http://www.usedcartips.org/DMV.html

good luck
