Tips on Buying Cars: wrecked car sold as clean, wrecked car, frame repair

Question
We bought a car nearly a year ago, one owner and "never wrecked". A few months later my husband discovered a label for a body repair shop inside the door frame. On inspection he discovered frame repair and aftermarket parts. The dealership says the carfax was clean and they had no way of knowing (I dont believe they knew because we test drove it as soon as it was brought in and bought it). They gave us the previous owners number and we cannot get her to answer or return our call. We have also called the body shop on the label and they will not tell us anything about the repairs done to our car because of "privacy". What rights do we have in KY?

Answer
Beth,

Thanks for your question.  There isn't much right that you have actually.  The dealer is correct.  If they didn't know, and the carfax was clean, there really isn't anyway for them to find out, if the previous owner did not tell the dealership.  I am VERY surprised that the dealership gave you the number to the previous owner.  The body shop is correct in not giving you any information, since privacy is a very hot topic right now.  That is why I am very surprised that the dealership gave you the previous customers number.  She does not have to answer any of your questions, as it is no longer her reasonability.  It is also not the dealerships, or the body repair shop's.  Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do.  Now, to put your mind at ease a little bit.  80% of the vehicles that are sold as used vehicles, have been in some type of wreck, or had some type of damage to them.  If the vehicle is running well, and the vehicle is working right, and you aren't having any problems with it, I would not worry about it.  I know this is easier said than done and I realize that.  If the carfax is clean, and the vehicle runs right, more than likely it won't hurt you on resale value down the road.

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but it is a very difficult situation, and not much can be done.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - jB
