Tips on Buying Cars: Bought used car but seller not paying lien, substantial fees, bill of sale

Question
I bought a used Murano a guy had leased from Nissan.  He was using my proceeds to buy out his lease, but Nissan is giving him trouble, not leting him buy out without substantial fees and additional taxes (CA).  I have the car and a bill of sale, but cant get title.  He wants me to pay the additional fees and taxes to clear his deal, I say they are his problem, I bought the car and will pay mytaxes when I register it.  He wants deal off and car back, what should I do?

Answer
John,

Legally you are in the right.  YOu have a bill of sale and that makes it final.  He is responsbile for anything else that may come up and legally must take care of it.  It is illegal to sale a vehicle with a lien on it, and not satisfy the lein.  It is actually a federal law that you can't do that.  He needs to take care of it.  It would be easier if the both of you worked it out together and came to some type of compromise because it would take a long time to get thru the legal system if you wanted to take him to court.

Hope this helps.
