Tips on Buying Cars: Returning a car, mechanic shop, returning a car

Question
I just bought a pre-owned car with the agreement of all problems are to be fixed (Breaks, new tires, suspension and minor body problems), I've had the car 2 weeks now and the suspension/handling still doesn't seem right. It's been in there own shop 2 times and they say all is fine.. If this true, can I still return the car?

Answer
Frank,

Thanks for your question, and a good one it is.

My first question to you would be what kind of form did they SIGN saying that they would fix all problems, and for what length of time did they say that provision to the sale was good for?  Most dealerships have lengths of time that they will do this for, usually with in 3 days.  If this is the case, then you are out of that time period.  If they did not specify a length of time then you have every right to return the vehicle.  I would suggest that you take the vehicle to another mechanic and let them look at it to see if anything is wrong with the vehicle and then take their findings back to the dealership and tell them what the other mechanic shop found wrong with the vehicle.  This will cost you a diagnostic fee but it might be well worth it.

This matter is all going to depend on the termanology that they used in the form where they specified what they would take care of and for how long.

If you simply do not feel good about the vehicle, then speak to the General Manager or Dealer about your concerns.  Most General Managers, Dealer Principles will find a way to make you happy if that is possible.  They don't want an upset customer out on the streets more than you want to be upset.

I would highly recommend that you get a second opionion on the vehicle condition, and then go from there.

I hope that this has answered your question.  Please feel free to provide me the termanology that the dealership used in that form, and I can better answer your question.

Thanks again for the question.
