Tires: Tire Size, toyota prado 2006, p245

Question
My Vehicle is Toyota Prado 2006 model (4 x 4 driver, 4 cylinder).  The Original tire size at vehicle purchase was 225 70R 17.  This size tire is not available and the dealers insisting for fix 245 70R 17 or 265 65R 17.  The specification near the driver's door side refers both 225 70R 17 as well as 265 65R 17.
Please suggest whether 265 65R 17 will fit to my vehicle?

Answer
Dear John,
Your Prado came equipped with a relatively rare tire size: 225/70R17.  Let's compare the overall diameter of the above sizes and available "load indexes":
(load index is a numerical value next to the tire size on the tire's sidewall that indicates the tire's load carrying capacity)
225/70R17 = 29.92" load index = 108 (reinforced)
P245/70R17 = 30.55" load index = 108 (standard load, Tire & Rim Assn)
P265/65R17 = 30.55" load index = 113 (standard load, Tire & Rim Assn)

I have checked the '06 Prado spec's and they show the 265/65R17 as original equipment on all trim levels (GX, GXL, VX).  As the P245/70R17 does offer sufficient load capacity compared to the original 225/70R17 tires and is within generally accepted standards for overall diameter, I would say they are an acceptable replacement option.
There is a difference in the load/pressure of the P245/70 vs. the 225/70 however (and I hate to confuse you here). The 225/70R17 is made to a European standard...the P245/70 to a N. American standard.  The maximum load and inflation of both tires is:
225/70R17: 2,205 lbs. @ 42 psi
P245/70R17: 2,205 lbs. @ 35 psi
therefore the P245/70R17 carries the same load at a lower pressure.  If you go ahead with the purchase of the P245/70, please send me a follow-up question with your Prado door placard air pressure recommendation...as we DON'T want to over inflate (over 35 psi)these tires.
