Tires: tire belt shift, honda pilot, inflation pressure

Question
i have a 07 honda pilot (24k miles), i experienced steering wheel vibration @
high speeds (80 mph) & upon breaking. The honda dealer explained that the
vibration upon braking was due to worn out rotors, which i had it fixed by
them, they told me that the vibration @ high speeds is due to a belt shift on
the tire. i called up goodyear & had it checked by them. goodyear is saying
that the tires are good, it was over inflated & needs balancing. i called honda
& told them this was the finding of goodyear but they are insisting that the
tires are causing the vibration. Should i just go ahead with balancing it? what
will happen if just leave it alone ( the vibration)?

Answer
Wit,

Honda should have balanced your tires when they did the brakes.  The fact that they didn't leaves me a little suspicious.

But perhaps they did and they realized that the tires are out of round because of irregular wear (which they are calling incorrectly "belt shift") and that is caused by misalignment (which they may think you'll try to pin on them), and aggravated by insufficient inflation pressure and insufficient rotation practices.

Here's what I would do:

Get an alignment somewhere other than the dealer, and ask for the before and after readings.  Check the readings to see what was out of spec.

Balance and rotate the tires - you should notice that the vibration moved in some way.

If so, then the problem was irregular wear caused by the misalignment, and eventually, the tires will develop a different wear pattern.
