Tires: v tires, bmw dealer, tire manufacturer

Question
My husband had a flat tire - v series on his BMW from driving over a screw. Mechanic says it's against the law to plug a high speed tire, but BMW claims it's okay. We're in PA. Who's right, legally? (Husband would only use plugged tire as a spare.)

Answer
Shirley,

I'm not an attorney, so I can't tell you about the laws in Pennsylvania.

But plugs are a bad idea.  They tend to leak, so they are considered temporary repairs.  A combination repair (a plug to keep debris out of the hole, and a patch to seal the tire) is the only authorized repair.

A couple of things:  BMW is not an expert in tires, neither is the BMW dealer.  The tire manufacturer is! - and they should be consulted.  My experience says to ignore anything you hear from BMW on tires.

Hope this helps
