Used Cars: bought unsafe car, stock specs, wheel wells

Question
My husband bought a used 2002 impala and when we took it for a 130 mile drive with the whole family in it. The rear tires hit the wheel wells every time we hit a bump, dip, or sharp turn. I took it to good year and they said the 20in wheels that were on the car were to wide and the tires had marks digging into the side of them and they could pop at anytime and it was unsafe. Also the car has been to DEQ (Oregon)twice and not passed. Do they have too buy the car back because it is unsafe and we cant register it and our permit is expired? Can we get out of the loan?

Answer
I dont know the laws in your state about this but I belive that if the car has been altered in any way that differs from the factory stock specs(20 in wheels)than your are buying a custom vehicle and any safety clauses wouldn't apply.  Here in Michigan there is no law regarding the safety of a vehicle. In Michigan the DMV would say that it was your responsibility to check the car out more extensively before buying it(and yes they are rude). The best thing I can recommend is to show the dealer what you have discovered and try to see if they will let you trade it for another car.  I am not an expert on this so please check with your local DMV,you may have more options available. Thanks for your question and good luck with this.  Shane
