Truck Repair: 79 chevy scottsdale 4x4 locking hubs, shift linkage, drive shaft

Question
Hello Van,

On a 1979 chevy scottsdale, my 4x4 use to work.
when I try to lock the hubs there is no click.
My front tires won't pull anymore. But the front drive shaft turns when I drive the truck, even if the transfer case is shifted into neutral. Do I need to replace the locking hubs? Or is there something else wrong.

Answer
Hello Ricky,
If the front driveshaft turns when the hubs are locked, they are probably ok, and the problem is in the transfer case.
They won't necessarily click when you lock them in.

Jack a front wheel off the ground, and with the transfer case engaged in 4X4, engine off, you should not be able to rotate the wheel that is off the ground.
If you can, see if the front driveshaft turns. If it turns as you rotate the wheel, there is a problem either inside the transfer case, or with the shift linkage.
