Truck Repair: 1986 chevy 305 pickup, spring compressor tool, chevy 305

Question
I love this truck but it is beginning to have problems.  1: it seems to be starving for gas, it will run after it heats up, but wants to stop sometimes when driving, where is the fuel filter, I have looked and looked and can't find it.2: it has started to use oil and smoke alot, would it be better to rebuild the engine or replace.

Thanks Van, sorry to be stupid, but I am on repairman.

Answer
Hello Gil,
That would have a carburetor, and thus, the filter is inside the fitting on the carb where the line from the fuel pump connects. After removing the line, remove the large fitting from the carb. Note the relationship of the spring to the filter, and also the direction the filter comes out. There is a check valve on one end of it.
When replacing it, be careful to not crossthread the fitting. The threads are real fine, and it is easy to cross them, and hard to fix.

As for the oil, I bet it is the valve guide seals leaking. It is a common problem on those engines. Usually they will produce a large puff of smoke the first time starting for the day, and then taper off.
This is actually a relatively cheap and easy fix.
It can be done without removing the heads from the engine, using compressed air through the spark plug hole to keep the valves closed, and a spring compressor tool.
The seals are very cheap.

Much cheaper than replacing or rebuilding the engine, and assuming it runs fine, and has no other problem like worn out rings, it can go for several more years.

The rings can be checked by a dry then wet compression test.

Good luck,
Van
