Vintage Cars: 1970 cutlass hardtop, mid size cars, cutlass supreme

Question
buying an old car and fixing it up has been a thing i've wanted to do for a long time. i've finally got a good job and have been looking around for ones that i think would be fun to do and i came across a 1970 cutlass in my area. the add says "2dr hardtop, 350 rocket, all original, needs restored" and it's $2500 OBO. it doesn't say if it runs or anything like that so i'm a little skeptical. what do you think? i'm 23 years old and would like to start this project soon and i'm willing for it to be a gradual thing but i don't want it to take forever.

Answer
There isn't enough band-width to TOTALLY answer this question, but let's cover the important stuff. Late 60s-early 70s GM mid-size cars will ALWAYS retain their value, so you've made a good choice.  Nearly all mechanical parts are readily available, but sheet metal could be a different matter.  Therefore, your number one consideration in regards to this car is corrosion.  If it's full of rust, then look elsewhere for a car to restore.  Parts are easily replaced, upholstery and carpets can be renewed, the exterior can be repainted.  But rust is insidious and never-ending.  If it really is in decent running shape and rust is at a minimum, then the price is more than fair.  One other warning:  whatever time and money you budget to restore this car, double both, as that will be a lot closer to reality.  My favorite Aunt Esther (the black sheep of my mother's side of the family, and always the life of the party) had a 1970 Cutlass Supreme coupe that I washed every Saturday for her.  I LOVED that car!  We need to restore more of these fine examples of GM at its best.  Good luck!
