How to Transfer Vehicle Registration

There are a few different situations in which you may need to transfer vehicle registration. You may be upgrading from an older vehicle to a newer model, want to change vehicles for the season, or have other reasons for transferring registration from one vehicle to another. If you already own a vehicle and want to register another, you must follow the proper steps to legally complete the registration transfer process and have the new vehicle registration and plates in your name.

  • Visit a local Department of Motor Vehicles or Secretary of State office.

  • Speak to a representative at the office and tell him that you plan to transfer registration from one vehicle to another and he will supply you with any forms you need to fill out or sign, and advise you of any required fees. Typically, you must pay for the title certificate, sales tax and a registration fee.

  • Show the official the ownership for the vehicle and advise her of the odometer reading and the VIN number on the vehicle. Once the paperwork is complete and any required fees are paid, the transfer of vehicle registration should be complete and you are can now legally operate the vehicle newly registered in your name.
