How to Decode the VIN on Mopar Muscle Cars

Chrysler has a motor parts division nicknamed "Mopar" that was started back in the 1920s. Today, the name generally refers to any Chrysler cars such as Dodge and Plymouth. The muscle cars made under Chrysler gained popularity in the 1960s. Each vehicle has a unique Vehicle Identification Number that details information about that make and model car. The length and style of the VIN code changed over the years, but you can use different online decoders to break down the VIN.

Things You'll Need

  • VIN number
  • Find the VIN on the driver's side dash and write it down. If it is not there, check on the driver side door jamb (the inside frame that is visible when you open the car door) or else check the engine block.

  • Determine the year of the Mopar. If you do not know it off hand, check the owner's manual or any window stickers that are visible. Note that there will be a 10-character VIN for models made in the years 1962 through 1965, a 13-character VIN if made between the years 1966 to 1980, and a 17-character VIN for models from 1981 to the present.

  • Check the driver's side fender below the hood for the fender tag if you still cannot find the VIN. The VIN is on the bottom line and is the last three groups of characters.

  • Go to an online Mopar decoder website and enter in the VIN number under the correct year decoder. The VIN will be broken down to tell you details such as the engine type and the production plant where it was built.
