How To Decide Between an Electric Golf Cart or Gas

Before you run out to your nearest dealer you've got to decide which type of golf cart will best suit your needs; gas or electric? At first it may seem counterintuitive to consider purchasing a gas golf cart, since most golf carts in operation are electric, and therefore run on batteries.

But depending on your needs, it may be a smarter choice to opt for a gas golf cart. Both gas and electric golf carts have their respective pros and cons, which means it's your job to decide which one would be right for you.

  • Consider how often you'll be using it. The longer you'll drive it at any given time, the more you should consider going with a gas golf cart.

With an electric golf cart, you can get about 30 to 40 miles and two hours of pedal time with a single charge, whereas with a gas golf cart you can pretty much drive all day. If you'll be using your golf cart for large farm maintenance or weekend hunting trips, the amount of drive time from an electric cart might not be enough.

  • Consider how much power you'll need from your golf cart. As you can probably guess, gas golf carts have got a lot more power than their electric counterparts. If you've got a lot of heavy towing and hauling, or a lot of steep inclines, then an electric golf cart might not have enough muscle for you.

  • You'll also need to factor in the cost of operating your golf cart. If you break it down, it costs about 2 cents per mile to run an electric cart compared to an estimated average of 10 cents to 15 cents per mile to run a gas cart, making an electric golf cart more affordable by comparison.

The cost of operating a gas golf cart depends on gas prices as well as the fuel efficiency of your cart. The cost of charging your golf cart is consistently inexpensive, although the cost of replacing your batteries can add up. If you go with an electric golf cart you should properly maintain your batteries to maximize their lifespan.

  • Finally, you should consider how environmentally conscious you should be. Electric golf carts are emission free, and therefore better for the environment, which is also one of their biggest selling points.

This is especially important if you will be driving your golf cart indoors. For instance, driving an electric golf cart inside of a warehouse is perfectly safe, while driving a gas golf cart in the same warehouse can be hazardous to your health.
