How to Check Points on a Driver's License

If you've received a handful of tickets or been involved in an accident or two recently, you may want to find out how many points are on your record. Rack up enough points and your license can be suspended. Although rules can differ between states, you can typically check for points by visiting your local department of motor vehicles or ordering a copy of your driver record.

Check Online

Many states provide drivers with online access to their driving records. Typically, this information is available on the state's department of motor vehicles' website. To access it, you will need to create a user account or provide personal details, such as your name, license number and Social Security number.

By Mail

Another common way to check your points is to order a copy of your driving record by mail. Although procedures can differ between states, many require you to submit a completed request form and pay the states fee. These forms go by a variety of names. For example, Texas calls it an "Application for Copy of Driver Record" while Missouri calls it a "Request From Driver License Record Holder." These forms typically are available online from your DMV's website.

You also may be able to request your record by submitting a written letter to the DMV. Include such information as your name, Social Security number and driver's license number, as well as a copy of your identification and the required fee.

In-Person Requests

You can also check your point allotment by visiting a local DMV office. A customer service representative likely will provide this information to you for free after checking your photo identification. You also can get a copy of your driving record at the local DMV by completing a request form and paying a fee.

By Phone

Some states, like New York, also allow you to order a copy of your driving record by phone. Speak with a customer service representative and provide your personal details, such as name and driver's license number. Acceptable payment methods usually include credit and debit cards.
