How to Turn in a GM Lease Vehicle

When the lease for your General Motors vehicle ends, you will need to turn in the vehicle to the General Motors Acceptance Corporation. Typically, at the end of your lease, you may turn in the vehicle and purchase a new one or sign up for a new lease. You also may simply return the vehicle and walk away or purchase the vehicle. Before you turn in your vehicle, there are a few things you must do before visiting a GM dealer to make sure you walk away without any further obligations.

Things You'll Need

  • Lease agreement
  • Keys
  • Keyless entry remotes
  • Vehicle documents received at lease inception
  • Owners manual
  • Maintenance guide
  • Optional equipment
  • Inspect your vehicle for excessive wear and tear before turning in the vehicle. You will find the exact definition of excessive wear and tear in your specific lease agreement. The lease will outline all parts that may incur charges if not fixed or replaced upon turn-in. If you do not arrange to repair the vehicle on your own, GMAC will bill you for any damaged or worn parts, as outlined in your lease.

  • Look at your odometer and record the mileage on the vehicle. Compare this with the mileage allotted in your lease. Any excess mileage will incur charges upon turn-in. Your lease will outline those total charges per mile.

  • Call your GM dealer and schedule an appointment to turn in your vehicle.

  • Visit the dealership at the time and date specified. Bring all required documents and items with you and make sure you complete the "Odometer Statement" provided by the dealer, to document the vehicle's current mileage.

  • Call GMAC at 800-200-4622 and inform the representative of the name and location of the dealership where you returned your vehicle.
