How to Reinstate a Salvage Title in Mississippi

A wrecked vehicle that has been totaled is issued a salvage title in the state of Mississippi. Depending on the extent of damage that has occurred to the vehicle, an individual might repair the vehicle and have a clear or rebuilt title issued. The vehicle will have to pass an inspection, and the type of title that will be reissued depends on the type of salvage title originally assigned to the car and the number and type of parts that were repaired or replaced.

Things You'll Need

  • Salvage title
  • Identification
  • Proof of repairs
  • State Inspection
  • Determine why the vehicle was totaled. This will play a part in how your vehicle can be re-titled and whether it will have additional damaged vehicle labels stamped on it by the Mississippi Tax Commission following inspection. The only vehicles eligible for a completely clear title are those that were involved in an accident and need less than one major part replaced and four minor parts or five or less minor components replaced. A rebuilt title is issued when the vehicle has had one major and five minor parts replaced, six or more minor parts replaced, or two or more major parts replaced. It will also be considered rebuilt if both the front and rear clip had to be replaced or the firewall or cowl replaced.

Major components as labeled by the state of Mississippi are the "cowl or firewall; rear clip including roof panel; front-end assembly; frame, or any portion thereof; roof panel when installed separately; motor or engine."

  • Replace all parts on the vehicle that need to be replaced. Save all documentation related to the parts and their replacement. Take pictures of the vehicle both before and after damage, documenting repair process. The pictures will need to be included with the application for inspection.

  • Submit an Application for Inspection of Salvage Vehicle to the state of Mississippi. Along with the application, you will need to provide the salvage title of the vehicle, notarized bills of sale for all major components used in the repair and receipts and invoices for minor components. If a parts vehicle was used for the repair, you will need to include the information about that vehicle as well. The vehicle will then have an inspection scheduled with the Department of Public Safety.

  • Receive the Completion of Vehicle Inspection form from the safety inspector when the vehicle passes its inspection, then apply for a new title with the state of Mississippi. The car will be issued either a rebuilt or clear title, depending on the circumstances and parts replaced.
