Sample DMV Questions

When taking the driver's test, there are many different types of questions that will be asked during the written portion of the exam. Typically, driver's tests are divided into two parts, the written exam and the performance exam, where the driver takes the wheel of a vehicle and demonstrates his capabilities on the road. Knowing some sample questions of the DMV's written exam can help you prepare for the day when you take the actual test.

Passing Vehicles

  • In a multiple choice format, a situation is presented and you are prompted to choose from one of a set of options that represent the correct course of action. For example, the statement "You may drive off of the paved roadway to pass another vehicle" has one of three optional answers: "if the shoulder is wide enough to accommodate your vehicle", "if the vehicle ahead of you is turning left" and "under no circumstances." In this case, the last option is the correct answer.

Road Markings

  • Painted markings on the road are an important part of the transportation system as they help direct drivers and indicate when it may be appropriate to perform certain actions such as passing. One sample question about road markings might be "what does a white painted curb mean?" Some sample answers include a "loading zone for freight and passengers", "loading zone for passengers or mail only", or "loading zone for freight only."

Vehicle Ownership

  • The DMV will also test your knowledge on vehicle ownership, such as when you need to register your car and how the license plates should be fixed to the car. One example of such a question presents the scenario "You sold your vehicle. You must notify the DMV within how many days?" Depending on the state, the answer could vary from 5, 10, to 15 days. Many states require you to report the sale so that you can turn in your license plates.

Signage

  • Just like road markings, road signs are important driving aids used by the Department of Transportation. A sign-related question might be "What does a five-sided sign mean?" Among the potential answers are "you are near a school zone", "you are going the wrong way", "NO", or "you are near a railroad." Knowing road signs is an important part of driving, so be sure to study all the different types and what they mean before taking the written portion of the driver's test.
