How to Change Your Address at the DMV Online

If you've moved and need to change your address with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles, sometimes you can make those changes online, depending on your state's policies. If your state does allow online changes, the same basic steps are followed, though the exact process varies state to state.

Step 1: Visit the DMV Website

From your state's DMV website, look for a link for change address or something with similar wording. Some states may require you to first log into your online account or create an online account. For example, a New York driver can change his address online through the New York MyDMV portal. Other states ask for personal information to verify your identity before you can change your address. Oregon, for example, requires you to enter your:

  • Driver's license number
  • Date of birth
  • ZIP code

Step 2: Provide New Address

Once you're logged into the system, provide your new address, including the street, city and ZIP code. Depending on the state, you may not receive a new driver's license as a consequence of doing this, but your address change will be reflected in the DMV's internal system. Some states send you a new address sticker to cover your old address on your license.

Tip

  • Some states restrict who can do an address change online. Your state's DMV website should explain this.
