How to Change a Car Tag

If you move to a new state or your old license plate expires, you will have to change the license plate on your car. Fortunately, the most difficult part of changing your car's license plate is actually getting the new plate. You can change the license tag on your car relatively easily with a screwdriver.

  • Obtain your new license plate. Go your local Department of Motor Vehicles office and either register your car in the state or renew your registration to get your new tag.

  • Use a screwdriver to remove your old tag from your car. Keep track of the screws you remove by putting them in a safe place.

  • Put the new tag in license plate holder. Line up the holes in the tag with the holes in the license plate. Reinsert screws into holes and tighten the tag using a screwdriver.
