What Size Trailer Can I Pull with a 4.3-Liter, 6-Cylinder Engine?

The 4.3-liter V6 engine was used in several General Motors vehicle models in the 1990s, including cars as well as small and full-size pickup trucks and vans. The towing capacity for vehicles equipped with these motors depended on the vehicle style and available add-on features.

5500 Maximum

  • Some models of full-size pickup trucks and vans with this engine are equipped with a towing package including special engine oil and transmission cooler, weight-distributing hitch and special wiring was rated to pull trailers weighing up to 5,500 lbs.

3500 Minimum

  • Light trucks and automobiles with 4.3-liter engines but equipped with no special towing features were rated to pull trailers up to 3,500 lbs.

Considerations

  • All trailers do not tow equally. A low-profile trailer pulls with less effort than a large, boxlike or camper trailer of equal weight. The tire size on the trailer, the number of axles and the type of roads and terrain also affect towing capability of any vehicle.
