How to Replace a Lost Car Title in Minnesota

Your vehicle title is a crucial piece of paperwork that proves ownership of the automobile. Without the title, you cannot sell your vehicle or transfer ownership of the vehicle in Minnesota. If you have lost your car title, you will need to request a duplicate title from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Things You'll Need

  • Duplicate Title application
  • Notification of Release form
  • Find your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). It is usually engraved on a plate on the inside of the driver's side doorframe, on the steering column, or the dash. The location varies between make and models and you can always check the owner's manual to identify all engraved VIN placements.

  • Download and print out a Duplicate Title application from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety website (See Resources). This application is a multi-purpose form so you will need to check off the box for "Duplicate Title." Fill out all requested information about the vehicle, including the VIN number, and secure the signature of any lien holders on the vehicle.

  • Download, print out and take the "Notification of Release" form (See Resources) to your lien holder. Have them sign, notarize the form and return it to you.

  • Purchase a money order or write a check made out to Driver and Vehicle Services for $15.75, the fee for a Duplicate title as of September 2010. Mail the Duplicate Title Application, the Lien Release form and your check or money order to Driver and Vehicles Services, located at 445 Minnesota St. Suite 168 in St. Paul, MN. The zip code is 55101. It will take approximately two weeks for your duplicate to arrive by mail at the address you provided in the application.
