10 Steps to Selling a Car

There are a few basic steps to selling a car yourself. It can be a daunting task if you've never done it before. Even if you have, there are probably a few mistakes that were made in the process. Following these simple rules will assure a seamless and profitable transaction.

10 Steps to Selling a Car

  • The very first step in selling your car is to determine fair market value. This dollar amount can vary greatly depending on where you live and what type of vehicle you are selling. For example, a 4-wheel drive vehicle will be worth more in the snowy Northeast, than it will in the desert Southwest. At the same time, a convertible roadster will have more value in the Southeast then it might in the rainy Northwest.

The second step is to get numbers on that value. The best places to determine value are NADA (National Automobile Dealers Association) and Kelly Bluebook. Both websites offer detailed instructions on how to determine the value of your vehicle in both the private sector and the dealership world.

The third step is to zero-in on your vehicle. To get the most out of a website like NADA, you must know a few things about your car, such as the options. Does it have power locks, windows, seats? A sunroof or maybe other features that you might take for granted will mean something to a perspective buyer. Engine size and towing packages all increase the value of your car in the NADA or Kelly Bluebook determination.

Step four is to choose a means by which to advertise. The local paper is a good choice; it will reach those people in your area who are seeking a new vehicle. There are also a variety of Internet sources, some which cost money and some that are free. The best idea is to browse these places and see if there are other local cars being advertised.

Step five is to write the advertisement. For obvious reasons you want to make your car seem in as good condition as possible. Make sure you highlight the best assets of your vehicle. You can do this by pointing out the things you like most about the car. Key terms such as "runs great" or "like new" will attract buyers even if they cannot be substantiated through print. Today gas mileage is very important, so if your vehicle shines in that department, make sure you point it out.

Step six, and arguable the most important aspect of actually selling the vehicle, is in improving the appearance. Hiring a professional detailer to clean the car is one option. That will cost you, but they will clean things you never thought of and every small nook and cranny makes a difference. If you are going to do it yourself, spend most of your time on the interior. A common mistake many sellers make is that they clean up the exterior, which is important, but they neglect the interior. A professional detailer can spend hours cleaning the interior of a vehicle, swabbing even the vents, and every knob and lever. Of course, making it smell nice is a touch that also won't go unnoticed.

Step seven, clean up the exterior. Although it is easier to clean than the interior, spend some time here. Just a good wash and wax might be all that is needed. A good tip is to buy a silicone-based treatment such as Armor-all to detail the dark areas. This includes the tires or any dark rubber items on the car. It is also advisable to spray the wheel wells-from a distance it will make the wheels look better. And speaking of wheels, don't neglect them. A good wheel cleaner will save you time, but you may have to clean them by hand. A nice clean wheel and shiny tire will go a long way.

Step eight, is showing the car. Once someone arrives to look at the vehicle, you are the salesperson. Don't go overboard, don't be too pushy or the buyer may think you are trying to hide something. Make sure you highlight the things you like about the car, and be sure to tell them that the car has been properly maintained.

Step nine is the test drive. It is a good idea to let the people drive the car by themselves. They may not feel comfortable with you as co-pilot, and you want them to feel as comfortable as possible in order to close the deal.

Step 10, the negotiations. Once you have a serious buyer, they are probably going to try and haggle with you over the price. Use what you learned while determining the market value of your car. If need be, show them what NADA or Kelly Blue Book had listed about the vehicle. It may be necessary to bend slightly in order to make the sale, but don't act desperate. And don't lie about other perspective buys unless they really exist. This is a sure way to send a buyer running.

Following these rules will help you make a speedy sale, and it will help you get the most money back from your investment.
