How to Transfer a Car as a Gift in Missouri

You can give your car to anyone you want to through gifting, but Missouri has specific requirements for recording the transfer. Even though no money has changed hands, a new certificate of title for the car has to be processed, and the gift needs to be reported to the Missouri Department of Revenue.

  • Obtain a state safety inspection of the car no less than 60 days before the title transfer. A list of Missouri authorized inspection sites is available online. (See Resources.)

  • Obtain a Missouri emissions inspection no less than 60 days before title transfer if the car is more than 5 years old, the person receiving the car lives in the city of St. Louis, or the person receiving the car lives in Franklin, Jefferson, St. Charles or St. Louis counties.

  • Complete the information on the certificate of title and enter the word "gift" instead of a selling price.

  • Write a statement that the vehicle is being given as a gift or complete the form DOR-768 (general affidavit) from the Department of Revenue. Give this statement, the inspection certificate, the emission inspection certificate (if required) and the title to the new owner.

  • Report the gift to the Missouri Department of Revenue by filling a notice of sale (DOR-5049) or bill of sale (DOR-1957) at least 30 days before the date of transfer.
