How to Sell a Car in Washington State

When selling a car -- and transferring the ownership of the vehicle -- to a buyer in Washington state, you need to take specific steps. Carefully following the proper guidelines will ensure a smooth sale of your car.

Step 1: Find a buyer.

Ensure the car is in a good condition before presenting it to the potential buyers. Clean it and check that all the parts are functioning well. When you get a buyer, let him test drive it and accompany him while doing so. DMV.org offers detailed information and tips on how to sell your car.

Step 2: Check the paperwork and inspection.

In Washington state, you need to fill out and sign specific documents to successfully sell a car. The Washington Department of Licensing facilitates this process. You must provide the buyer with all the relevant documents. The title certificate should have your signature. You and the buyer must complete the Washington Bill of Sale. The date of sale and the price of the vehicle should also be included in this document and any other basic information. Notify the DOL about the sale. Report the sale of the car to the DOL and fill out the Vehicle Report of Sale form. An emission certificate is also required to be completed in some Washington counties.

Warning

  • Your vehicle must pass the inspection on emissions before you register it.

Tip

  • You can access inspection requirements here as well as vehicle-inspection information.

Step 3: Apply for a duplicate certificate and registration.

If you have damaged, lost or destroyed your certificate, you can apply for a duplicate Washington Certificate by filling out the required form. A fee of $31 is required for the title certificate at the time of publication. In case of a duplicate registration, the Affidavit of Loss/Gross Weight License/Release of Interest form should be completed.

Step 4: Provide the buyer with a vehicle history report.

Doing this will make it much easier for you to sell the car, as the buyer will have all the important details regarding the history of the vehicle. This will also give the buyer a chance to assess the car before buying it, including information like odometer issues and theft. You can access more information on your vehicle's history report through the DMV.org website.

Step 5: Transfer the license plates.

After successfully selling your car, you can transfer the license plate and registration to another car if you live in Washington state.
