TOM ADAMS

This sporty wagon feels very solid and capable, and stays well planted even on loose gravel. A few times during my weekend drive, I was able to forget I was driving a station wagon, as the turbo four and all-wheel drive move out almost quickly. This is a family vehicle, but a stylish one. The wheels and tires contribute greatly to performance and appearance, and the A4's premium interior was clean and pure Audi: uncomplicated and well laid out, although I did have some trouble.

The windshield wiper controls were hard for me to sort out, especially the rear wiper. After expelling half the wiper fluid, I figured it out. And I wanted a bit more lateral legroom up front, and a better armrest. But the rear seats fold down nicely for more stuff, and the first aid kit in the rear armrest is a bonus. Overall, I'd make this my personal family vehicle if it weren't for the exorbitant price.

JARED GALL

I love this engine. It's phenomenal in the GTI and the TT, and even in the heavier A4 Avant it's a champ. No, it doesn't have low-end that will stress the rubber (or drivetrain), but it has plenty of pep to keep the drive interesting. You do notice more turbo lag in the heavier car, but it is an amount I am willing to forgive in a sporty and reasonably economical wagon. Well, economical at the base price, anyways. Ten grand in options, anyone?

There are those who would consider 200 horsepower in a luxury car insufficient, but get real. How often does anybody use or need more acceleration than this car is capable of? This is a great wagon, even with a dinky engine.
