How to Change the Rear Brake Rotor on a KIA Spectra

The Kia Spectra first entered the American marketplace during the 2000 model year. Kia redesigned for car for 2004 and discontinued it in 2009. The Spectra came standard with rear drum brakes, however, rear disc brakes were an option. Spectra owners with these optional rear disc brakes can benefit from learning how to change the rear brake rotors themselves.

Things You'll Need

  • Lug nut wrench
  • Jack
  • Axle stands
  • Wrenches
  • Mallet
  • Wire hook or bungee cord
  • Park the automobile on a firm, level surface. Block the front wheels to prevent the automobile from rolling. Do not set the parking brake. Put automatic transmissions in park and manual transmissions in first or reverse gear. Loosen the wheel lug nuts about half a turn. Jack up the automobile and set it securely on an axle stand. Finish removing the lug nuts and pull the wheel off.

  • Remove the two caliper guide rod bolts. Lift the caliper off the rotor and hang it out of the way using a wire hook or bungee cord. Be careful not to stretch or kink the flexible brake hose. If the caliper is difficult to remove, roll it back and forth to force the brake pads apart a little.

  • Pull the rotor off the hub. On 2004 and later models, the rotor is secured by a retaining screw. Remove this screw and then pull the rotor off the hub. If the rotor is difficult to remove, tap the inner rotor surface firmly with a mallet to loosen it. Do not hit the rotor rim or the rotor braking surface.

  • Reverse steps to reassemble the brake using a new rotor. Start the vehicle and test the brake operation. Replace the wheel and lower the vehicle.
