How to Fix a Loose Windshield

Keeping the windshield in your vehicle in the best possible condition is vital in ensuring clear visibility when your vehicle is on the road. If your windshield comes loose the best thing to do is fully reattach the whole windshield to the vehicle frame to ensure that it is completely fixed in place. You can pick up the tools you will need for the job from your local auto store.

Things You'll Need

  • Sharp blade
  • Cleaning fluid
  • WIndshield sealant
  • Nylon cord
  • Use a sharp blade to carefully cut away the rubber seal around the edge of your windshield. Pull the trim away with your hand as you cut it. Take care not to scratch or damage your windshield with the blade.

  • Push the windshield out of the frame from inside the vehicle. Have someone on hand to help lift out the windshield. Remove the old gasket. Place a thin layer of windshield sealant around the edge of the windshield.

  • Attach a new gasket to the bottom of the windshield so that the heavy part is on the inside and the slit is on the outside. Tie a nylon cord around the outer groove of the windshield.

  • Place the windshield in to the vehicle frame. Hold it in place for a few minutes to allow the seal to set. Pull the cord across the windshield from inside the vehicle to allow the rubber lip to set in place.

  • Use a cleaning fluid to completely clean both the inside and the outside of the windshield. Clean the dashboard and electrical components to ensure no debris got in to the vents.
