1968 Chevy C10 Step-by-Step Tilt Column Upgrades

The stock steering column in a 1968 Chevrolet C-10 pickup did not have options like tilt, and as a result, the cabin of these trucks are a little cramped for space, particularly for people who are a bit larger than average. As an added bonus, it also puts the steering wheel in a better ergonomic position. Because of this, installing a tilt column can be more comfortable for the average driver, because it provides more room for your torso. To do that, you need to get a few custom parts, but you can do it in a few hours.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Steering wheel puller
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Aftermarket tilt column
  • Pop the hood. Locate the steering box, which is on the driver's side framerail, and connects to the firewall via the intermediate shaft and the steering column. Unbolt the clamp connecting the column to the steering box using a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then unbolt the clamp connecting the column to the intermediate shaft with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Pull off the horn button on the steering wheel with your hands. Unbolt the center nut on the steering wheel with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then install the steering wheel puller on the steering wheel. Tighten down the threader shaft on the center of the steering wheel puller puller with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket until the steering wheel pops off of the column.

  • Unplug the wiring to the column with your hands. Unscrew the trim panel from underneath the column with the Phillips-head screwdriver, and then unbolt the column from the dash with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the column out of the dashboard with both hands.

  • Slide the replacement column into the dashboard and bolt it to the column with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Plug the wiring that you removed from the stock steering column in step 3 into the harness on the replacement column using your hands and then re-install the trim panel that you removed in step 3 on the dash with the Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • Reconnect the two clamps under the hood with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Install the steering wheel on the column with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and push the horn button back onto the steering wheel.
