How to Change the Ignition Coil in a Honda

The ignition system in a Honda uses individual ignition coils to control the spark going to each spark plug. If one of these coils should fail, the engine won't fire on all cylinders, which means that you won't get enough power or performance out of the engine. To fix the problem, you can change one of the ignition coils, which will take just under 10 minutes to do per coil.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Pop the hood. Remove the plastic trim panel that's mounted just above the ignition coils on the valve cover, using a flat-head screwdriver.

  • Unplug the wiring harness to the ignition coil you want to replace with your hands. Unbolt the coil from the engine with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Grasp the top of the ignition coil with your hand as you simultaneously twist and lift up the coil from the head.

  • Push the replacement ignition coil firmly into the cylinder head until you head a popping sound, indicating that the coil is solidly on the spark plug.

  • Bolt the replacement ignition coil into the cylinder head with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Plug the harness into the replacement ignition coil. Reinstall the plastic trim panel with the flat-head screwdriver.
