How to Use a Harmonic Balancer Installer

Harmonic balancers are tightly fit to the crankshaft. It's important to use the right tools and technique when installing a harmonic balancer. Hammering a harmonic balancer on can damage both the crankshaft and the balancer. Using the balancer bolt to pull the harmonic balancer on can ruin the threads in the crankshaft. A harmonic balancer installer presses the harmonic balancer onto the crankshaft without causing any damage.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench
  • Anti-seize compound or light oil
  • Put the car in gear to immobilize the crankshaft.

  • Clean the crankshaft snout and the harmonic balancer bore with a rag or an abrasive pad. Apply light machine oil or anti-seize compound to the crankshaft snout and the balancer bore.

  • Slide the harmonic balancer onto the crankshaft, taking care to line up the Woodruff key on the crankshaft with the keyway on the balancer. Slide the balancer on as far as possible using hand pressure.

  • Thread the balancer installer into the threads on the end of the crankshaft. Thread it in fully, but don't tighten it.

  • Using a wrench, turn the nut on the harmonic balancer installer. This will push the harmonic balancer in place on the crankshaft. Continue turning the nut until the balancer is fully seated onto the crankshaft.

  • Remove the harmonic balancer installer from the crankshaft.
