How to Read the Check Engine Code on a 1995 Nissan Maxima

Reading the check-engine codes on a 1995 Nissan Maxima is a fairly simple process. The OBDII, or On Board Diagnostics II, codes are linked to the emissions systems, transmission and fuel systems. OBDII replaced OBDI in 1994. The process of reading the check engine codes should take no longer than five to 10 minutes if you have never done this work before. The tool needed for this job is available at most auto parts stores and some general retail stores.

Things You'll Need

  • OBDII code scanner
  • Insert the OBDII scan tool plug into the OBDII scan tool port, located underneath the dashboard, just below the steering wheel.

  • Turn the key to the "Accessories" position, which is the position where all the dash lights come on before you start the vehicle.

  • Press the "Read" button on the OBDII scanner to perform a diagnostic exam of the codes on your car. Write down the codes, along with any description of the code that the scanner gives you.
