How Do I Install a 84-91 Chevy Truck Wiper Cruise Control Lever Arm?

Every industry has tricks of the trade. While it may seem a daunting task to replace a cruise control lever on a GM truck, there is a quick way to get the job done. This switch does double duty--it also operates the tilt function of the column. With a little know-how and some simple tools, you can install a new switch in less than 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Mechanic's wire
  • Masking tape
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Screwdriver set
  • Set the tilt column to straight ahead. Remove the old switch by grasping the lever and pulling it out. The switch is a friction-fit design. No attaching screws or bolts hold it in place. Do not attempt to pull it any further since the switch wires run the length of the column.

  • Remove the lower access panel under the dash. Gently tug on the cruise control handle and watch the lower column for movement. The wires are located there and will move. They are also plugged into a connector. Unhook the wires from the connector. Carefully look at the end. There is a tiny hole in the plug.

  • Insert the mechanic's wire into the hole and twist it tightly to the plug. Wrap the plug with masking tape to smooth the rough edges. Pull on the handle to start the plug and wire up the inside of the column. If it gets snagged, pull the mechanic's wire back down and start the process over. Continue pulling back and forth until the connector is out of the opening where the lever is inserted. Remove the mechanic's wire from the old switch.

  • Insert the mechanic's wire into the hole on the new connector. Wrap it in tape as before. Pull the wire down and work the connector back and forth to draw it down the length of the column. This is usually much easier than removal. Remove the tape and wire, then insert the connector into the plug. Replace the lower cover and push the lever into the slot. Note that the lever is keyed and will only go in one way.
