How to Remove a Broken Spark Plug From a Ford Triton Engine

When a spark plug breaks on you, there is a lot of work to get the problem fixed. That's because depending on how the plug broke, you may have to go so far as to remove the head to get it done, and may even have to replace the cylinder head entirely in an extreme case. To fix the problem takes some creative thinking, and even that may not solve the problem completely. But this method can potentially save the cylinder head on your Ford Triton engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Spark plug socket
  • 3/8-inch breaker bar
  • Cyanoacrylate glue
  • Pull out the spark plug socket and look at the inside of the socket. Tilt the plug wire just past horizontal so the opening on the socket is pointing up slightly. Apply the cyanoacrylate glue to the inside of the socket, all the way around the circumference.

  • Quickly push the spark plug socket onto the broken spark plug. Allow the socket to sit for 10 to 20 minutes to allow the glue to fully dry, depending on the concentration of the glue.

  • Attach the 3/8-inch breaker bar to the end of the spark plug socket. Slowly turn the socket counterclockwise to attempt to remove it from the cylinder head. If it works, then the spark plug will come out of the head with the socket. Discard the socket and spark plug.
