How to Remove the CV Axle in a Mitsubishi Mirage

The CV axle that connects the transmission to the wheels on a Mitsubishi Mirage is a device whose purpose is to enable the front wheels to turn left and right even while the suspension articulates up and down and the wheels spin on their hubs, driven by the engine-propelled driveshaft. The joints allowing this to happen can wear out over time. Although you can replace just the joint, replacing the axle can be not only less expensive to do, but also easier over time. The process of removing the axle is the first step of the process, which should take about 30 to 45 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Cotter pin puller
  • 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • Open-end wrench set
  • 24-inch pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Punch
  • Remove the hub cap by hand. Remove the cotter pin in the center of the wheel using the needle-nose pliers and the cotter pin puller, then loosen the axle nut in the center using a 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Jack up the front of the car with the jack, then set it down on the jack stands. Take off the wheels using the tire iron, then remove the center nut on the axle using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Unbolt the lower strut fork from the lower control arm using a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Unbolt the lower control arm ball joint from the steering knuckle using an open-end wrench, then separate the steering knuckle from the lower control arm.

  • Set the head of the pry bar between the axle and the transmission. Pry the axle out of the transmission, then maneuver the half shaft down below the transmission.

  • Set the punch into the detent in the middle of the axle in the middle of the rotor. Strike the end of the punch using the hammer until the axle pops out of the rotor. Pull the half shaft away from the vehicle.
