Battery cables in a Jeep endure more than on a typical vehicle, and that's because of the different conditions that most owners put their Jeep in. When the cables start to fail, you'll have starting problems, problems keeping electrical accessories running as well as others. Replacing the battery-cable assembly can be a simple process if you keep things organized and replace each connection one at a time. This process should take approximately 45 minutes to perform.
Open up the hood. Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery using an open-end wrench, then do the same on the positive terminal.
Take out the replacement positive battery cable and lay it out in the engine bay. Locate every connection that the current battery cable is connected to, and make sure the replacement cable is running to the same spaces.
Unbolt each connection on the factory battery cable, including the alternator, starter and fuse block, using a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Install the replacement cable on these connections using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Then connect the replacement battery cable to the positive terminal on the battery and remove the old cable completely.
Locate the frame mounts on the negative battery cable by tracing the cable visually. Lay out the replacement negative cable in the same manner you did with the positive cable in Step 2, then replace each individual connection using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
Install the negative terminal on the replacement cable onto the negative post on the battery with an open-end wrench. Remove the old cable.
