How to Remove a Rear Spring on a Volkswagon Jetta

The Volkswagen Jetta is a very popular car to own and to modify, for a lot of different reasons. Car tuners like the European suspension design and handling, and others just prefer the look. One popular modification to these cars is to lower them by installing lower springs. This drops the roll center, improves handling and looks better as well. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Lift up the rear of the car using the jack, and set the body down onto the jack stands. Then take off the tires using the tire iron and set them to the side.

  • Set the jack underneath the lower control arm just below the spring on one side of the car. Unbolt the bottom mount on both shocks using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Slowly lower the jack handle down. The springs will decompress gently until they fall out of the rear suspension. If they don't fall out on their own, pull them out using your hands.
