How to Replace a Steering Rack

Modern automobiles have many advantages over older models, including the addition of the steering rack. Not only is it easier to align, but it also provides better steering response. Sometimes steering racks go out for one reason or another, but they're not that difficult to replace. Here we will go through the steps of replacing a steering rack on a 2001 GMC Sierra.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch ratchet and sockets
  • 1/2-inch ratchet and sockets
  • Brake line wrench set
  • Power steering fluid
  • Rubber mallet
  • Wrench set
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on jack stands. Make sure the vehicle is secure before you crawl beneath it. Also make sure that the wheels are straight and that the steering wheel is locked.

  • Unbolt the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles with a wrench. Make sure the ends are out of the knuckles.

  • Take the cap off of the power steering fluid reservoir.

  • Loosen the power steering lines connected to the rack with the brake line wrenches. These lines are under pressure, so crack the lines first before going full-bore. Once they're not under pressure anymore, loosen them completely.

  • Unbolt the steering rack from the column.

  • Unbolt the rack from the frame while supporting it with a hand or a spare set of jack stands. Once it's loose, remove it from the vehicle.

  • Re-install in the reverse order of installation. Be sure to center the new rack turn to turn before its installed so that you don't lose turning radius on one side.

  • Unlock the steering wheel with the vehicle in the air, and turn the wheels from lock to lock 10 times. This will help work the air out of the power steering system.
