How to Touch Up Paint on Car With Rust

Dealerships, mechanic shops and auto parts stores should be able to help you determine the exact color of your car's paint using the VIN. Paint pens, liquid paint and spray paint should be available in the appropriate color. Use the method of painting you feel the most comfortable with or the one that is recommended by the dealer or mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Paint
  • Sandpaper
  • Body filler(optional)
  • Visit a dealership or mechanic for the make of the vehicle being painted and determine the exact color of paint you will need.

  • Sand and clean the spot that is being repaired. Remove all rust as even one tiny spot will come through in the future

  • Apply the touch up paint only in the unpainted area. Do not let the paint bleed too far into the old paint on the car. Blend the edges in slightly so it doesn't look like just a splotch of paint.

  • Sand the first coat after it has dried and apply a second coat. Follow the manufacturers recommended instructions on the paint can or package for how many coats are recommended.
