The ignition switch is part of a car's starting system. When you turn the key to the start position, an electrical impulse runs to the solenoid, which activates the starter. When the starter engages the flywheel, it starts the engine. There are several reasons why you may want to change the ignition switch, including if you lose your keys or someone breaks the switch when trying to steal your car. Replacing the ignition switch on a 1995 Nissan Altima is not difficult but will take about two hours because you also have to remove the steering wheel.
Disconnect the battery with a wrench to loosen the nut. Wait for 10 minutes before you begin to work on the ignition. If you don't, you will deploy the airbag.
Remove the covers from the steering column with the screwdriver. Remove the steering wheel centerpiece with the screwdriver. The screws are on the back of the steering wheel. Remove the center nut from the steering wheel with a wrench. Pull the steering wheel off of the steering column with the gear puller to make it easier.
Remove the spiral cable assembly from the steering wheel column. Remove the combination switch from the column by pulling it out.
Remove the two support nuts at the center of the steering column with a wrench and lower it down. Unplug the ignition switch wiring harness. Remove the bolts, holding the steering lock in place with a wrench. Pull out the lock switch.
Insert the new ignition switch into the Altima and secure the bolts with the wrench. Plug in the ignition wiring harness. Push the steering column back up into place and secure the nuts with a wrench. Put the combination switch into the column and then the spiral cable.
Place the steering wheel back on the steering column and secure the nut with a wrench. Place the steering centerpiece on and tighten the screws with the screwdriver. Place the steering column covers back on the column and tighten the screws with the screwdriver. Connect the battery cable and test the switch.
