How to Replace a Starter Switch

The electrical system of your car or truck consists of your battery, the ignition switch and your starter. Your starter switch is essentially a type of relay between your car battery and the your starter motor. Voltage from your battery travels through the starter switch to the motor. If your engine ever fails to start, a bad starter switch could be the problem. If you do not hear a slight clicking sound, it may signal you a dead, or dying, car battery.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Replacement starter switch
  • Open the hood of your vehicle, and remove the negative battery cable, using your socket set.

  • Locate your starter. The location of your starter and starter switch will vary, depending on the year, make and model of your vehicle. Consult your owner's manual or an auto parts store employee, to determine where your starter switch is located on your vehicle.

  • Loosen, and remove, the nut that attaches your positive battery cable to your starter switch.

  • Remove the wires from your starter switch, take note of their respective locations, as you will need to reattach them. The wires can be pulled out by hand.

  • Loosen the two bolts that fasten the starter switch in place. For most vehicles, this will be on the side of the engine compartment. Slide the old starter switch out, and put the new one in place. Refasten the bolts.

  • Replace the starter switch wires in the same order they were removed.

  • Reattach your positive battery cable to your starter switch, and replace your negative battery cable.
