How to Remove the Starter in a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder

Removing the starter from your 1995 Nissan Pathfinder is the first step in its repair or replacement. The starter is located on the passenger’s side of the engine, near the back. Replacement starter motors are available from several sources, including the Nissan dealer and auto-parts stores, while you can pick up used starters from many salvage yards. You have to work underneath the truck to gain access to the starter.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Ratchet
  • Locate the negative battery cable on the battery terminal and remove it from the battery.

  • Raise the front of the Pathfinder with a jack and support it on a set of jack stands positioned under the frame rails. Working from under the truck, remove the mounting bolts from the front gravel shield with a socket and ratchet and remove it from the truck.

  • Locate the starter motor's electrical connections on the rear of the starter motor. Disconnect the “S” terminal by releasing the locking tab on the electrical connector and removing it from the starter.

  • Locate the “B” terminal on the rear of the starter solenoid. Remove the retaining nut with a wrench, then slide the cable off the terminal. Remove the two starter retaining bolts using a socket and ratchet and lower the starter out of the engine compartment.
