How to Rivet on Body Panels

If a vehicle inspector tells you that your fender or some other body panel is rusted out and needs replacement, you can do one of two things. You can take it to a body shop and have them fix the problem, or you can do it yourself with rivets and a new panel.

Things You'll Need

  • Pop rivet tool
  • Pop rivets
  • Power drill with bit suitable for the size of rivet being used
  • Clamps
  • Clamp the panel in place where you wish to mount it.

  • Drill holes through the panel into the existing mount location on the vehicle. The hole size will depend on the size of the rivet. It is best to use the largest rivet for the space provided for added strength. Place them every 4 to 6 inches, and within an inch of the ends.

  • Place the rivet mandrel into the rivet gun. Insert the rivet end into the hole and actuate the gun lever until the mandrel breaks off. Continue with all rivets. Once done, you have successfully riveted on body panels.
