The Power Steering on My Pontiac Montana Has a Humming Noise

Your power steering pump is part of a hydraulic system that allows you to easily turn your Pontiac Montana. When there is a problem with the pump, it will frequently provide you with an audible warning.

Power Steering Fluid Level

  • The first place to look when you begin hearing noises from your power steering pump is the fluid level. Your Montana pump is located directly in front of the engine block. Ensure your fluid is at the proper level. Low fluid levels will cause your pump to make noises and will quickly lead to internal problems.

Power Steering Pump Belt

  • Your Montana uses a single, serpentine belt. Ensure there is proper tension between the belt and the pump. Your pump has three mounting bolts that can allow the pump to shift if they become loose. This can cause the belt to squeal as it tries to power the pump.

Internal Problems

  • Your pump has a rotor with vanes. These vanes function like the paddles on a paddlewheel, pushing the fluid into the pressure hose that leads to your steering box. The bearings that the rotor spins on can wear out. As this happens, your pump will produce a range of audible noises. Your pump must be replaced if the bearings fail.
