How to Repair a Sunroof Drain

If you have a sunroof on your car, periodically you will want to clean the drains. There are drains on the both sides of the car that allow rain and snow runoff to drain to the outside of the car, instead of ruining your upholstery. If you have a clogged drain the water can do all kinds of damage to the inside of your car. If your sunroof drains are clogged and need repair, you can clean then yourself with a few basic tools, in about 15 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Air compressor with spray nozzle
  • Long, thin wire
  • Locate the drains. There are drain holes located on both the driver's and passenger's sides of the vehicle, towards the front of the sunroof. These holes are about the size of a paper hole punch.

  • Locate the bottom of the drain tube. Inside the vehicle, you will have to unfasten the plastic cover panel that hides the tube. This is a piece of molding that is located just inside the door, next to the seat. Pull the paneling back with your hands and locate the black drain tube.

  • Disconnect the drain tube from the vehicle. Pull the rubber boot from the hole in the vehicle, where it drains to the outside. This will allow you to get access to clean it out.

  • Repair the sunroof drains. Starting with the bottom attach the spray nozzle from an air compressor in the end of the drain tube and blow air into the tube, releasing anything trapped in the tube. Perform the same technique from the top of the tube. Clean out both sides of the vehicle.

  • Re-connect the drains. Connect the drain boot to the hole in the outside of the vehicle to make sure that the water does not end up on the floor. Re-attach the plastic molding. Test your drains by pouring a cup of water down them and make sure that the water drains to the outside of the vehicle. If the drains are still clogged, you can run a long, thin wire down the length of the drain pipe to make sure that that the debris is removed.
