How to Replace the PT Cruiser Airbag Sensor

The airbag sensor for the PT Cruiser is part of the SRS control module. This module supplies the electrical current to the supplemental restraint system. It is stored underneath the Cruiser's center console between the two front seats. Replacing the airbag sensor means replacing the full control module. You must use extreme caution when replacing this component due to the pressure the air bags are under. Make sure the system is completely shut down of before working on any part of it.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Disconnect the Cruiser's negative battery cable and wait two to three minutes for the air bags to run out of power. Disconnecting the positive cable can help; disconnect it after the negative cable.

  • Raise the parking brake lever and then pull off the upper knob of the gear shift. You will need to remove a setscrew on an automatic transmission

  • Remove the screws---two at the front and two at the rear---for the center console with your screwdriver and lift the console out.

  • Disconnect the electrical connector in the rear of the control module.

  • Unscrew the nuts mounting the module to the floor pan using a wrench and remove the module from the floor.

  • Install the module to the floorpan with its nuts and connect the electrical connector.

  • Reinstall the center console with its screws and reconnect the knob for the gear shift.

  • Reconnect the battery; if you disconnected both cables, connect the positive battery cable first and then the negative cable.
